Mice and Multiple Sclerosis Research
Multiple sclerosis (MS) occurs when the immune system attacks myelin, the protective covering around nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Mice have helped scientists investigate how the immune system contributes to this damage and what happens when myelin is lost.
Research with mice allows scientists to examine these processes throughout the body and nervous system and evaluate potential ways to reduce inflammation, protect nerve cells and promote repair. This work has contributed to our understanding of MS and the search for better treatments.
