A Closer Look

Location: United States
Group: Rodents
Species: Mouse
Research Areas: Cancer

This nude mouse rests on a caregiver's finger during a health check. "Nude" mice have a genetic change that affects both hair growth and development of the immune system. Because of their reduced immune function, they have been especially important in areas of research where scientists need to study cells or tissues that would normally be rejected by a fully functioning immune system, including many types of cancer research. Like other research animals, they receive regular health observations and veterinary care.
