Golden Syrian hamsters are susceptible to a virus Golden Syrian hamsters are susceptible to a virus called SV40 which is related to human-associated viruses in a family called polyomaviruses. SV40 is a virus that causes cancer in hamsters making them a valuable model for studying how these types of viruses may cause cancer in humans in hopes to find ways to treat them. Examples of polypmaviruses that cause cancer in people include the Epstein-Barr virus known to cause leukemia and lymphomas, the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes cervical cancer and Hepatitis B and C viruses which have been associated with liver cancer. These viruses also cause kidney and neurologic diseases. Hamsters are needed to understand how the viruses leads to disease so that therapeutics to treat or prevent polyomavirus infections can be developed. #hamster #hamsters #animalresearchsaveslives #animalresearch #hepatitis
These sheep are on the maternal nutrition study me These sheep are on the maternal nutrition study mentioned in the previous post with Ernest the ram. Sheep thrive in social groups of at least five members.
Research facilities strive to design housing that best meets the needs of their animals. This flock room is lined with hat that is changed every other at allowing the sheep to graze as they would naturally in a pasture. Their hooves are trimmed monthly and their wool is clipped every three months to ensure optimal comfort and health. Mounted along the walls are large brushes, similar to something you would see at a drive-through car wash. The sheep like to rub up against them as they would to a tree or fence. β€οΈπŸ‘πŸ‘
